SUMMARY:Madrean Plants - Hike With Mike
DESCRIPTION:Carr House Visitor Information Center \nSaturday\, September 15\, 9:30 a.m. \nTake a beautiful drive up Carr Canyon Road to Carr House on September 1st and join Mike Foster\, Carr House host\, to learn more about the plants of the Huachuca Mountains.  Mike’s presentation will start at 9:30 a.m. with a short video about many of the plant species in the Madrean Evergreen Woodlands surrounding Carr House.  You’ll learn about the “sky islands” of the Huachuca Mountains and how plants here more closely resemble those of the Sierra Madre Mountains to the south rather than those of the Rocky Mountains to the north. \nFollowing the video\, Mike will lead a short walk around Carr House so we’ll have the chance to identify the plants introduced in the video.  There may be opportunities to see other inhabitants of Carr Canyon as well\, such as insects\, lizards\, birds and mammals. Bring your camera!  You’ll want to snap a few photos to help you remember the flora and fauna you’ve seen. \nThe presentation and walk will take approximately 1½ hours. \nFor safety reasons occupancy in Carr House is limited to 49 people. In the past\, the audiences for some popular programs have exceeded that number. Please arrive early to be sure you get a seat\, as additional visitors over the limit will not be admitted while the program is going on. Overflow guests will be invited to watch a live stream of the program at our outside picnic area. \nCarr House is located on Carr Canyon Road\, 2.1 miles from the intersection of Highway 92 at the Mesquite Tree Restaurant. \nPlease consider becoming a member of the Friends of the Huachuca Mountains. Visit our website\, www.huachucamountains.org\, for more information on who we are\, what we do\, and how to become a member.

SUMMARY:The Great 1887 Sonoran Earthquake
DESCRIPTION:We will examine Arizona’s earthquake risk by recognizing the statewide distribution of known faults and view seismic risk maps.  Then\, we will consider the often spoken of (but little known in terms of detail)\, 1887 Sonoran earthquake through a review of historic damage pictures\, as well as the geological features of the Pitaycachi Fault.  You will see how it has been studied more recently to analyze its future activity potential.  Finally\, you will have the opportunity to review the first-person narrative accounts from more than 200 Arizona locations\, nearby states\, and Mexico.

SUMMARY:John and Ila Healy: Carr Canyon Pioneers
DESCRIPTION:Carr Canyon Visitor Information Center \nSaturday\, July 7\, 9:30 a.m. \nHe was the longest serving officer at Fort Huachuca.  She led mountain lion hunts and collected snakes. John and Ila Healy were naturalists\, historians and hosts. And they did so much more from their home in Carr Canyon. The Friends of the Huachuca Mountains invite you to learn more about the Healys on Saturday\, July 7\, with a history talk and walk led by Carr Canyon resident Rosemary Snapp. The program will start at 9:30 a.m. \nThe Healys had a ranch in the canyon from 1937 to 1972.  John’s career at Fort Huachuca started with the 10th U.S. Cavalry\, patrolling the Mexican Border at Lochiel in 1918. John was also the last commander of the Apache Scouts. His service at Fort Huachuca spanned both World War I and World War II. In Ila’s spare time\, she managed a dude ranch in Carr Canyon for hunters\, birders\, and children with asthma. \nFollowing John’s death in 1972\, Ila made the difficult decision to sell her beloved ranch to the U.S. Forest Service\, except for 5 acres\, which Rosemary and her husband\, Ralph\, now call home. Thanks to Ila\, and now Rosemary and Ralph\, who continue to preserve the history of this beautiful area\, we can all enjoy this special place for years to come. \nFor safety reasons occupancy in Carr House is limited to 49 people. In the past\, the audiences for some popular programs have exceeded that number. SUMMARY:Volcanoes\, sky islands\, and cordilleras
DESCRIPTION:Sierra Vista is at the center of the Sky Island Archipelago – a collection of mountain ranges that rise high above the deserts and grasslands. They provide critical habitat to an incredible array of flora and fauna that give this region the reputation of one of the most biologically diverse areas in the country. In this presentation we will soar far above the Sky Islands to look at the whole region that stretches into Mexico\, We will look at the canyons of the Huachuca Mountains for evidence of a violent past and will dig deep into the earth to look at the ways these ranges have formed over time.
