DESCRIPTION:Carr House Visitor Information Center \nSaturday\, August 18\, 9:30 a.m. \n  \nHead on up to Carr House August 18th and prepare to be amazed at the variety of plants in this beautiful setting.  And prepare to be even more amazed at videos showing people of the Southwest gathering and preparing traditional foods and medicines from the wild.  The program will start at 9:30 a.m. \nMike Foster\, Carr House host\, will explain how present day people of Sonora still know the value of the plants in the environment around them.  Mike will also discuss how you too can begin to take advantage of some of these plants. \n  \nA short walk around Carr House will follow the presentation so that participants can use their new-found knowledge to identify plants and discuss how they can be used.  The presentation and walk will take approximately 1½ hours. \n  \nFor safety reasons occupancy in Carr House is limited to 49 people. In the past\, the audiences for some popular programs have exceeded that number. SUMMARY:Trogons of the Arizona Borderlands
DESCRIPTION:Rick spent 8 summers beginning in 1977 conducting research on the life history and ecology of Elegant Trogons in Arizona.  His studies soon led him south of the border to look at populations of these and other trogons\, and in 1980 he founded Borderland Tours\, an international birding tour company dedicated to responsible ecotourism.  Rick is the author of location checklists for the Huachuca and Chiricahua Mountains\, as well as Trogons of the Arizona Borderlands (1994)\, A Birder’s Guide to Southeastern Arizona (2005; a title in the ABA regional field guide series)\, and a photo field guide Birds of Southeastern Arizona (2010).

SUMMARY:Voices from Arizona’s Past and Modern Voices in our Night: Deal with Climate Change (or else)
DESCRIPTION:Climate is shifting worldwide at a historically unprecedented pace. SUMMARY:John and Ila Healy: Carr Canyon Pioneers
DESCRIPTION:Carr Canyon Visitor Information Center \nSaturday\, July 7\, 9:30 a.m. \nHe was the longest serving officer at Fort Huachuca.  She led mountain lion hunts and collected snakes. John and Ila Healy were naturalists\, historians and hosts. And they did so much more from their home in Carr Canyon. The Friends of the Huachuca Mountains invite you to learn more about the Healys on Saturday\, July 7\, with a history talk and walk led by Carr Canyon resident Rosemary Snapp. The program will start at 9:30 a.m. \nThe Healys had a ranch in the canyon from 1937 to 1972.  John’s career at Fort Huachuca started with the 10th U.S. Cavalry\, patrolling the Mexican Border at Lochiel in 1918. John was also the last commander of the Apache Scouts. His service at Fort Huachuca spanned both World War I and World War II. In Ila’s spare time\, she managed a dude ranch in Carr Canyon for hunters\, birders\, and children with asthma. \nFollowing John’s death in 1972\, Ila made the difficult decision to sell her beloved ranch to the U.S. Forest Service\, except for 5 acres\, which Rosemary and her husband\, Ralph\, now call home. Thanks to Ila\, and now Rosemary and Ralph\, who continue to preserve the history of this beautiful area\, we can all enjoy this special place for years to come. \nFor safety reasons occupancy in Carr House is limited to 49 people. In the past\, the audiences for some popular programs have exceeded that number. Please arrive early to be sure you get a seat\, as additional visitors over the limit will not be admitted while the program is going on. SUMMARY:Volcanoes\, sky islands\, and cordilleras
DESCRIPTION:Sierra Vista is at the center of the Sky Island Archipelago – a collection of mountain ranges that rise high above the deserts and grasslands. They provide critical habitat to an incredible array of flora and fauna that give this region the reputation of one of the most biologically diverse areas in the country. In this presentation we will soar far above the Sky Islands to look at the whole region that stretches into Mexico\, We will look at the canyons of the Huachuca Mountains for evidence of a violent past and will dig deep into the earth to look at the ways these ranges have formed over time.
