Dear Friends,

It seems like only yesterday that we were opening Carr House for the season, and here it is almost time to close it up for the winter.  Our last open weekend at Carr House will be Thanksgiving weekend, when we’ll be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  We’ll be getting together at Carr House on December 5th at 9 a.m. to pack up all the displays to keep them safe over the winter, and we’d love to have you join us if you can.  Many hands make light work!

We’ll open the house for next season on April 4, and again we could use help with unpacking the displays and giving the house a good spring cleaning.  We’ll be doing that on April 2 at 9 a.m., so if you’re available, come on up!

New Board Members

We’re pleased to welcome Eric Andersen, Vice President; Linda Stitt, Secretary; and Dwight Hoxie, Director; to the FOHM Board.  All of them bring great enthusiasm to our group, and we look forward to continuing our wonderful working relationships with our Board to keep exciting things happening at Carr House and beyond.

Site Hosts

John and Karen Poole have returned as our site hosts for the winter, and we already have a list of “to-dos” for them.  John will be taking care of some construction projects around the house, while Karen plans to repaint eaves, window casings, and anything else within reach of her brush.  We are so fortunate to have such accomplished and energetic site hosts.  Not only do they take care of maintenance around the house, they also take care of the Reef Townsite camping area, the Perimeter Trail picnic area, and Brown Canyon Ranch visitor facilities.  If you visit one of those sites and notice that the trash has been emptied and the restrooms cleaned, you can thank John and Karen!

Annual Meeting and New Huachuca Mountains Video

We held our Annual Meeting on November 2 at Carr House.  In addition to the opportunity to meet and mingle with some of our members, we were pleased to share with them the new video commissioned by FOHM and produced by Mike Foster highlighting our favorite Sky Islands, the Huachuca Mountains.  The video is inspiring, and we hope it will inspire many more visitors to experience the great outdoors right in our own backyard.

If you haven’t watched the video yet, you can see it on our Facebook page or on our website.  Since we posted the video on our Facebook page November 3, it has reached more than 5,000 people!  Check it out!

New Addition to Mining and Minerals Room

New Board member Dwight Hoxie, who worked for the US Geological Survey for 30 years before retirement, has donated a geologic map of the Huachuca Mountains to be displayed in the Mining and Minerals room.  Be sure to look for it this spring, so you can gain a greater understanding of the geology that shaped our Sky Islands.

Gardening Work Around Carr House

FOHM member Joan Donat has been working with Mike Foster to clean up the planting areas around the house.  Joan has donated Mt. Lemmon Marigolds for the front garden area and Huachuca Agave which have been planted near the handicapped entrance.  Take a look the next time you visit; you’ll be impressed!

In Closing….

It’s been another successful year for FOHM thanks to hard work by so many people.  We averaged about 33 visitors to Carr House each day and our Sunday afternoon programs were excellent and well attended.  We’re going to continue to build on that success!

See you in the spring!
